Pericardiectomy is a surgical procedure involving the removal of the pericardium, the lining that covers the heart. The pericardium may be removed in its entirety or partially. It is not frequently used as this invasive procedure is associated with several serious risks. However, it has advantages such as helping ease the symptoms of the cancer such as chest pain, difficulty breathing and increases life expectancy.
