Peritonectomy is a surgical procedure commonly performed on patients who suffer from peritoneal mesothelioma, the second most common type of mesothelioma, and it consists of removing the cancerous tissue from the abdominal cavity. This procedure is usually performed simultaneously with cytoreductive surgery, a procedure that requires the use of a device known as an electrosurgical handpiece in order to effectively remove mesothelioma tumors. After undergoing these procedures, the patient is usually recommended chemotherapy treatments. While the term peritonectomy indicates that this surgery consists of complete or partial removal of the peritoneum, it is not uncommon for it to also consist of removing parts of other organs affected by cancer such as stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, etc.
