Shunt placement is a procedure that involves the insertion in the pleural area of a long tube with a pump in the middle, the other end of the tube being inserted into the abdomen. The pump is placed over the ribs, just under the skin. Then the patient presses on the pump to move the fluid from the chest to the abdomen, where there is a better chance to be absorbed.
