Thoracentesis is technique used to remove excessive fluid (pleural effusion) accumulated between the lungs and the pleura, a thin membrane that covers the lung and helps with the breathing. The fluid is extracted with a hollow needle or a cannula. This technique has a diagnostic role but also improves the life of the patient who has severe respiratory problems due to the fluid accumulation.
