The transurethral resection of the prostate, or TURP, is a surgical procedure meant to treat problems in the urinary tract that are caused by an enlarged prostate. This procedure is carried out by using a resectoscope, which is a surgical instrument that is inserted through the urethra and that is used to trim the excess prostate tissue. This procedure is considered to be extremely effective and is generally performed when other treatments have failed.
